At A Glance at HCMS

This four day week will wind down the first semester at HCMS. Students will be getting report cards on January 14th that reflect their achievement from the first half of the school year. Please know that we want every single student to be successful. If you have concerns please contact us for a parent conference. I recently came across a video online of a middle school student who obviously has been struggling with mathematics for a long time. However, on this day he had a report card that he couldn't wait to show his dad. I love this dad's emotion when he sees his report card. Check it out.
Our wrestling team will be finishing up their regular season this week. Coach Sickman has done a great job coaching the guys. They will go into next weekend's middle school conference tournament as the number 1 seed. Great job guys!
Our boys basketball team is undefeated in the West Georgia Middle School Conference. They have several conference games coming up this week. Please come out and support our Braves this week.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas break with your families. Students last day will be December 19th and their first day back will be January 6th. Merry Christmas everyone!

At-A-Glance Week of 11/18

Getting Organized
As students enter middle school, their ability to stay organized and on top of assignments is very important. We realize this is not a lesson that is learned in one sit down session at the kitchen table. Has the conversation below happened at your house?
  • "How was school?"
  • "Great!  I only have math homework."
  • "Are you sure?"
  • "Absolutely.  Nothing else.  I asked my friend, too."
  • Didn't you have Health today?"
  • "Oh yeah, he gave us a worksheet to do.  And we started our new technology class today.  It looks great."
  • "Don't you usually have a syllabus or something to sign when you start a class?"
  • :"Oh yeah, I forgot.  I need you to sign two papers."
  • "It's Monday.  Didn't you have a letter you had to write in class today in Language Arts?  Do I need to sign it?"
  • "Yeah."
  • "And spelling due Thursday?"
  • "Uhuh.  She handed out a sheet."
  • "Your social studies teacher sent me a copy of your study guide for your test Friday."
  • "But that's not due until Thursday!"
As a faculty we are putting assignments on teacher's webpages this year. They can be found under the section entitled, "Calendar." Many of our teachers reach out in others ways as well, i.e. Remind 101 and email blasts. If you feel "out-of-the-loop" please email or call our teachers. I also want to share a couple of apps that are made for students to help them to stay organized now and in high school.
Remember the Milk is a free personal organization tool that works online and with mobile phones.  Remember the Milk allows students to add assignment due dates to their to-do lists via text, email, or directly on their account homepage. A word of caution, while these services are free, students could incur a lot of charges from text and data communication on their mobile phones so be sure to look at your text and data plan before downloading this one.
Wunderlist
Wunderlist is a simple-to-use to-do list app that keeps track of several subject-related lists. Students can create a different to-do list inside of the app for each subject. Thanks to its recurring items and notifications, deadlines are difficult to forget.

I hope that these apps might be useful to you and your child if they are struggling to stay organized.
